Co-Curricular Deputy

The Co-curricular Deputy is responsible for managing all aspects of the co-curricular programme, ensuring excellence across departments and supporting our belief that co-curricular activities are an essential part of pupils’ development.

Leadership and Strategy

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive co-curricular strategy aligned with the school’s mission and values.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to integrate co-curricular activities into the broader educational framework.
  • Inspire and guide the teaching faculty to uphold the highest standards in co-curricular excellence.
  • Regularly review and evaluate the effectiveness of programs to ensure they meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Fulfil the duties required of members of SLT, including (subject to the changing needs of the School):
  • Being on call at least one day per week for emergencies and covering weekends according to SLT rota.
  • Organising exeat trips according to rota (usually one per year).
  • Attendance at school events such as Open Days, Social Events, Parents meetings, Results Days etc.
  • Play a key role in ensuring that the school is successful at school inspections.

Co-Curricular Programme

  • Create a vibrant, enriching, and inclusive co-curricular program that complements the academic and personal development of students, including arts, sports, clubs and leadership opportunities.
  • Be responsible for ensuring the School’s co-curricular activities are delivered to a high standard and manage timetables, budgets, staffing and resources to optimise program delivery.
  • Manage the weekly co-curricular programme, working conjunction with the Academic Deputy to ensure sufficient timetable allocation is given to the delivery of the co-curricular activities.
  • Manage the weekend programme of activities, ensuring and enriching experience for our boarding pupils, assigning staff to Saturday duties, according to their skills, knowledge, and availability and overseeing Exeat arrangements.
  • Manage the School’s Scouting programme, Duke of Edinburgh, and oversee the activities of the Combined Cadet Force.
  • Organise the School’s Enrichment Week, held annually in the last week of the academic year, offering pupils the chance to explore new pursuits and acquire new skills.
  • Coordinate proposals for overseas trips, advising the Deputy Head on feasibility and benefits where appropriate.

Staff Management & Coordination

  • Lead and manage a number of Heads of Department as directed by the Head in the constant pursuit of raising teaching standards, ensuring that the tracking of pupil progress, provision for very able pupils and those with SEN is appropriately integrated, and literacy and numeracy are promoted across the curriculum.
  • Mentor and support staff involved in co-curricular activities, including coaches, advisors, and external partners, assisting the Head in the recruitment and interviewing of applicants for teaching, advising on the appointment of staff where required.
  • Develop and deliver training sessions to enhance staff capabilities in leading activities.
  • Collaborate with faculty to ensure co-curricular activities complement academic objectives.
  • Working with the Commercial Manager, plan effective use of leisure facilities.

Student Engagement

  • Promote active participation in co-curricular activities among students across all year groups.
  • Identify and support students with unique talents and interests to pursue their passions.
  • Foster an inclusive environment where all students feel encouraged to participate.
  • Oversee the management of school-wide co-curricular events such as competitions, performances, and exhibitions.

Administration

  • Work in conjunction with the Marketing Team to produce a termly handbook or the like to keep current and potential parents informed about the school’s Co-Curricular provision.
  • Ensure all necessary risk assessments and adequate controls are in place for activities and trips, upholding health, safety, and safeguarding standards during all activities, attending Health & Safety meetings.
  • Oversee the effective use of digital platforms for activity registration, scheduling, and communication (e.g. SOCs and EVOLVE).
  • Maintain accurate records of student participation and achievements.
  • To be a member of Events Committee and attend termly Calendar meetings.

Teaching

  • Plan and prepare courses and lessons in your assigned teaching subjects. (NB This post has a timetable reduction of 20 periods per fortnight where a full-time teaching post covers 54 per fortnight).
  • Teach, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned to you; setting and marking work (including examinations) to be carried out by the pupils in school or elsewhere.
  • Assess and report on the development, progress and attainment of pupils, liaising with parents.
  • Promote the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned to you, providing guidance and advice to pupils on educational and social matters.
  • Accompany pupils on trips away from the School.

Child protection, discipline, health and safety

  • Continuously promote and safeguard the welfare of pupils.
  • Maintain good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguard their health and safety both when they are on the School and/or School premises and when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere.

Other

  • Undertake all other reasonable duties as requested by the School.
  • Holidays will always be taken during normal School holidays, however the post holder is expected to work some days of the holidays as required in support of this management position and in further training without additional payment.
