Teacher of Chemistry
We wish to appoint an enthusiastic and talented part-time Teacher of Chemistry from September 2026 at this welcoming and highly successful independent school. This is a substantial part-time teaching role which will need to be spread over at least three days.
This post is suitable for an experienced teacher or a well-qualified ECT. The successful applicant will be able to teach Chemistry and Biology up to GCSE and Chemistry up to A level, ideally, with some experience of delivering A level Chemistry in an academic environment.
The salary will be according to qualifications and experience on Farnborough Hill’s own generous pay scale. There is the use of an iPad for teaching and administration, free on-site parking, remission of fees for a daughter attending the School (in line with the current policy, subject to the usual standards and procedures for admission), and ‘death in service’ (four times salary paid to next of kin). In accordance with the School’s current employment policies, the first two terms of the appointment will be probationary.
The Science Department
The Science Department is housed in six modern, well-resourced Laboratories with Prep Rooms and a Science Staffroom. There are eight full-time members of staff and three part-time members as well as three Laboratory Technicians. This includes the Head of Science (and Physics), and Subject Leaders of Biology and Chemistry. The Science staff work very well together and the ability to contribute to a team effort is essential for this post.
For each group in Years 7 and 8, the Science curriculum is delivered by a single teacher. In Year 9, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are taught as separate subjects and this arrangement continues at GCSE. At Key Stage 4 we teach the AQA specifications: Combined Science: Trilogy for the core curriculum with the option of taking Biology, Chemistry and Physics as Separate Sciences. Approximately a third of the Year Group opt for the Separate Sciences.
Currently, at A level the department offers the OCR Chemistry A, Physics A and Biology A and AQA Psychology specifications. The Sciences are popular choices at A level and there are usually two Chemistry groups, two Biology groups, one Physics group and two Psychology groups in each Year Group at A level. The Science GCSE and A level results are excellent and the department has a good record of sending pupils on to a wide range of universities, including Oxford and Cambridge, to read Science, Engineering, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and related subjects.
This is an opportunity to work in a highly regarded and successful girls’ independent school with motivated pupils and a very supportive ethos.
Farnborough Hill is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. Successful applicants will be required to undergo the appropriate DBS Code of Practice check.
