PURPOSE
This job description is provided to teachers to understand and appreciate the work content of their post and the role they are to play in The Southover Partnership. The post holder is required to undertake the professional duties and responsibilities of an Assistant Headteacher, as set out in the job description below. It may be modified by the Executive Headteacher, with your agreement, to reflect or anticipate changes in the job commensurate with the salary and job title.
The post holder is expected to uphold the professional codes and standards as set out by the DfE and the Trustees.
RESPONSIBILITES
- To promote the vision, values and core purpose of The Southover Partnership in line with agreed policies, guidelines and protocols.
- In the absence of the Head of School, be prepared to lead and manage in line with the school’s policies and guidelines.
- To provide professional leadership which secures, in consultation with the Trustees, the success and improvement of the school, ensuring high quality education and care for the students so that they are safe and happy at school and enabled to be successful learners who achieve high standards.
- To model exemplary standards, core responsibilities and fulfil the role of a teacher and a leader.
The Assistant Headteacher will lead on a range of these tasks with details agreed with the post holder upon appointment, depending on the needs of the school:
- Mentoring and line managing teaching and support staff
- Curriculum provision and the learning environment
- Pupil Voice and personal development
- Assessment
- The vocational curriculum
- Other as agreed with the Executive Headteacher on appointment
JOB SPECIFICATION
Strategic direction and school improvement
- Assist the Executive Headteacher and Heads of School in their work with the Trustees and to provide vision, purpose and leadership of the school and secure effective teaching and successful learning and achievement by students.
- Contribute to the School Improvement Plan through appropriate consultation and identifying priorities and targets which ensure that students and staff achieve high standards, students make progress relevant to need, are safe, and enjoy their learning and work.
- Assist school improvement, the achievement of objectives and the success of students and staff.
- Assist in the leadership, management, and administration that supports the school’s vision and aims.
- Contribute to the monitoring, evaluating, reviewing and analysis of the effectiveness of the school’s policies, practices and priorities, through the school’s self-evaluation process.
- Support the Executive Headteacher and Heads of School, to develop the school as a centre of excellence for SEND.
Teaching, learning and the curriculum
- Demonstrate, model and develop the characteristics of good and outstanding teaching by maintaining a teaching role (as required, across the age and need range of the school) and be an active and effective coach, mentor and guide for all staff and Trustees.
- Support the Heads of School in identifying appropriate CPD and associated staff development to ensure outstanding outcomes for students.
- Promote respect, understand and celebrate diverse cultures, languages, ethnic groups, faith groups, gender diversity and orientation and disabilities.
- Assist the development of systems within the school that support positive behaviour and attitudes and ensure staff maintain the capacity to manage the SEND of the students.
Leading and Managing staff
- Assist, motivate, support, challenge and develop staff to secure improvement, including demonstrating a commitment to their own and others’ professional development.
- Ensure effective working relationships are formed between staff, and between staff and students.
- Lead teams, and work within teams, and develop an ethos of collective ownership to secure improvement.
- Implement and sustain effective systems for the review and appraisal of staff.
- Assist Human Resource Management, including recruitment, retention, disciplinary, grievance, capability and staff attendance.
- Support or lead the induction and mentoring of staff, including mentoring Early CareerTeachers/recently qualified teachers by providing guidance and support to all staff.
- Acknowledge, prevent and address inequalities, promote cohesion within the school community and beyond.
Support efficient and effective deployment of staff and resources
- Assist in staff and resources deployment efficiently and effectively in line with the outcomes in the School Improvement Plan.
- Assist in managing, monitoring and reviewing the use of available resources to improve the quality of education and care to secure value for money.
Accountability
- Assist the Executive Headteacher and Heads of School by providing information, advice and support to the Trustees to enable them to meet their responsibility for securing effective learning and teaching, the curriculum, behaviour and safety and improved standards of achievement, attainment and value for money.
- Ensure students, parents/carers and their families are well informed about learning and teaching, the curriculum, assessment, and targets for improvement regarding their areas of agreed responsibilities.
- Be accountable for agreed areas of the curriculum and leadership responsibility.
- Create and maintain an effective partnership with parents/carers/families to support and improve outcomes for students.
- Take on any other duties commensurate with the role which support the aims of the school and purpose of the post.
